Christmas and the dead of winter are almost upon us. Society members and friends are invited to a social gathering at the Bay Side Bed and Breakfast, December 13th from 1-4.

The Society has taken a hiatus on construction and renovations this year but it has been busy lining things up for next year. We have been paying down our debt on the extra work that Arcan Construction had to do when the new roof was put on the Rec Hall. We have also been working with the city to acquire a lease on the site and we have been exploring fundraising strategies.

The Society hosted two nights of entertainment and sightseeing on the Norweta on August 26-27th as part of its fundraising efforts. The first night members of the society and friends were offered tickets to enjoy the sights of Yellowknife Bay and a steak dinner, followed by stories from Geddes Webster, a mining engineer who was in Yellowknife after World War II.

Regular maintenance and repairs of our buildings will continue for the foreseeable future until such a time as we can raise the necessary money to begin major renovations to our museum buildings. A government grant to conduct some foundation repairs to the recreation hall building is being investigated.

June was full of mining related events as the NWT celebrated its annual Mining Week June 9-14. Our Annual General Meeting was held on June 11 and we had a very good turnout to the BBQ at Giant Mine. The weather cooperated with us and the bugs were very tame. Burgers and soda were enjoyed by all, and our members were given the opportunity for interpretive tours of our old mining machinery.

Welcome to all our new members and welcome back to all of our renewing members. Glad to have you onboard. We have another very busy year ahead of us. Our main objective remains to create a vibrant museum and interpretative centre at the old Giant Mine Site.
